Motivational Think-piece #5

RE-TRAIN YOUR BRAIN & REALISE YOUR POTENTIAL

It’s sad 99% of us will never get the opportunity to consider what their potential is. We hope and wish as we watch the 1% realise their dreams but never stop and think we can be part of that. We forget that these people aren’t gods, they’re people just like us who overtime worked the a**es off to get to where they are. We’ve programmed ourselves to believe that to even consider getting in their position we’d have to be a dreamer, it’s “unrealistic thinking”. For some reason we don’t even give ourselves the opportunity to think about our potential, we call it dreaming. Early on in our lives we accept the standard we set ourselves and believe it to be impossible to realise our dreams. We then make do with settling in to the sub-par standard we’ve set ourselves. We’re wasting what’s been given to us, selling ourselves short and it’s sad.

Ever wonder why anxiety and depressions is on the rise? Well, that’s pretty obvious because we’re not happy, but why we not happy? I believe many of us aren’t happy because we’re living lives that aren’t our own, we’re not following our callings because our callings are “dreams”. It’s easier to call it a dream and right it off than actually put in some work to make it a reality. It helps that society encourages us to take the easy way too. If we’re not working a stable job with consistent income or getting an education leading to a comfortable and stable career were meant to feel like we are or are going to be a failure. Don’t get me wrong having a stable job or career and solid income is necessary but the problem is we settle with that job because it’s comfortable and easy. Then because of laziness we write off our dreams and tell ourselves it’s unrealistic and a dream, make excuses and create a false reality for ourselves. We need to question our realities, why have we deemed something as unrealistic or a dream. For example as a teenager I convinced myself climbing Everest was a dream and not realistic? Why did I do this? Thousands have climbed Mount Everest why can’t I? I’m healthy, I can train, I can earn money. Another example, a couple years ago I considered running anything over a marathon was crazy and could only be done by elite athletes with superhuman gifts. This was so not true, I can say that because I’ve run 100 miles non-stop and I’m no elite athlete and I’m definitely not superhuman. It was all a false reality I created for myself because I was scared to make an attempt of achieving these goals. I was scared of the hard-work it would require and the potential pain I’d be in whilst trying to achieve these goals. Heres a task I want everyone to try. Ask yourself, how far do you think you can run? Now write that down before reading the next paragraph.

Ok so now you’ve written down how far you THINK you can run it’s time to realise how much MORE you can run. Go for a run and force yourself to run 1 more kilometre or 0.6 of a mile than what you thought you could run, no if’s or buts just go do it. Then come back and read the next paragraph.

If you’ve done as I’ve asked you’ve just proven to yourself that you’re more capable than what you believed. You broke through a false reality/limit you put on yourself and in doing so you’ve created a new reality. Thats how people get to the point where they run their first marathon or ultramarathon. As they gradually increase each run and put in the work they begin to question old limits they once put on themselves and start wondering what else they’re capable of. Before they knew it they went from being a 5 km park runner to an ultra-marathoner. This goes for all things in life, from someone performing at school plays to a Hollywood star, from a “nerdy” biology student to someone creating cures and vaccines that saves millions of peoples lives, from a teenager creating videos in his room to a YouTube star. They allow themselves to dream, they put in the work, be patient and get too were they want to be.

So stop selling yourself short.
